Background: Healthcare for the Baltimore-Washington Metropolis

CMSI started working with the University of Maryland Medical System in 2004. Since then, we have executed numerous projects in multiple facilities, including the main medical center in downtown Baltimore, University Midtown campus, St. Joseph’s in Towson, Shore Health in Easton, and Baltimore Washington Medical Center (BWMC).

When one of their hospitals needs an invasive project that could affect their workflow, they rely on us as a preferred contractor. We execute fast-paced invasive projects as efficiently as possible, and we thrive in environments that demand cleanliness and infection control. We have successfully renovated various floors and towers of BWMC, transforming the 70-year-old building into a comfortable, up-to-date hospital that makes patients feel at home.

Objectives: Complete Renovation of Fourth Floor

BWMC sought to provide their patients with an updated hospital facility, including improved infrastructure, state-of-the-art systems, and modern finishes. Recognizing our unique abilities to strategically plan turnkey projects and minimize disruptions to clinical operations, BWMC contracted us to completely demolish and renovate the interior of their fourth floor south tower.

Approach: Phased Construction Above the Mother-Baby Unit

We worked with BWMC to minimize disruptions to the operational mother-baby unit located directly below the fourth floor construction project. We orchestrated a phased approach and carefully coordinated with the clinical care teams, making daily adjustments to ensure that the patients and healthcare providers below were unimpeded by the construction.

During the early demolition phase, we discovered that some of the original water lines were leaking behind the walls and ceilings. By identifying the problem early enough, we were able to replace this major utility and prevent significant failures in the future, without delaying the project and without interrupting hospital operations.

Results: Better Healing Environment

We completed BWMC’s fourth floor renovation on time and within budget in November 2017. The medical staff and patients now enjoy a safer, more efficient environment, which features new mechanical and electrical systems, upgraded life-safety systems, and state-of-the-art nurse call and telemetry systems for critical communications. By converting their patient rooms from semi-private to completely private, BWMC now provides patients with a more comfortable, personalized experience. By leveraging our exceptional design-assist and construction management services, BWMC offers a well-designed healing environment for today’s patients in the Baltimore-Washington area.
