WellSpan York Hospital MRI Expansion

Project Description

In 2019, CMSI completed a one-story building addition at the hospital’s North Entrance. This phased project increased the hospital’s capacity from one MRI to three MRIs.

  • Delivery Method: Design–Build
  • Project Size: 7,200 Sq Ft Department Expansion
  • Project Duration: 17 Months
  • Phasing: Two Construction Phases
  • Cost: $7,400,000 Design and Construction
  • Features: 1.5T Philips MRI with Ambient Experience, 3.0T Philips MRI

Unique Challenges

Demolition Logistics

A 6,000-square-foot section of the existing building needed to be demolished to make space for the addition. The demolition impacted various departments, including volunteer services and the hospital’s blood bank.

Solution: CMSI renovated a food service space, where the affected departments could be relocated. CMSI also temporarily relocated the blood bank and took appropriate temperature-control measures to preserve the supply.

Construction Logistics

The construction site was in the vicinity of the hospital’s main entrance.

Solution: CMSI created a solution to safely redirect traffic and organized complex site logistics to keep the main entrance accessible to vehicles and pedestrians.

Expedited Timeline

Toward the end of this project, COVID-19 was on the horizon.

Solution: CMSI successfully finished this project in March 2020, earlier than originally planned. This allowed the new structure to pass the required city and state inspections, right before pandemic-related restrictions were imposed.

Results

CMSI delivered:

  • Two New MRI Scan Rooms
We designed the rooms to house the Philips 1.5T and 3.0T and to serve both adults and children, including inpatients and outpatients.
  • New North Entrance
We designed the entrance with aesthetic and practical enhancements, such as a beautifully patterned brick wall that can open to allow the MRIs to be moved through the wall, and a concrete sidewalk with a snow melting system.
  • Enhanced Patient Care
York Hospital can now offer reduced wait times for critical imaging procedures, due to their increased capacity.
  • Operational Continuity
We maintained seamless hospital operations through meticulous phasing, coordination, and logistical planning.
  • Future-Ready Design
We incorporated flexible mechanical systems and aesthetic integration to support WellSpan’s long-term campus planning.
